YCS Austin: Road of the champion - Misplay analysis

So, Oscar Zelaya won YCS Austin with Mono Mermail

My prediction was right: A bunch of Mono Mermails made it to the top, and Mono Mermail won the whole thing

In this post I'll be covering the featured matches of Oscar. You'll find my reason of doing this shortly

Top 16: Oscar Zelaya vs. Dominique Eskridge

Duel One

Eskridge opened up with Mirror Force, Monster Reborn, 2 copies of Bottomless Trap Hole, and 2 copies of Kabazauls. He Set Kabazauls along with Bottomless Trap Hole and Mirror Force before passing his first turn.

[When a Dino Rabbit player opens 2 Kabazauls against a Mermail player, things are easy to predict]

Zelaya discarded Atlantean Marksman to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus. He grabbed Mermail Abyssgunde with Abyssteus’s effect, and targeted Bottomless Trap Hole with Atlantean Marksman; but Eskridge chained Bottomless Trap Hole to banish Mermail Abyssteus. Zelaya discarded Mermail Abysslinde and Mermail Abyssgunde to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo next. He added Abyss-sphere from his Deck to his hand with the effect of his Abyssmegalo and Special Summoned Mermail Abysslinde with the effect of Mermail Abyssgunde. Zelaya Normal Summoned another Abysslinde, and then attacked Eskridge’s face-down Kabazauls with his Abyssmegalo. Direct attacks from both Abysslindes dropped Eskridge down to 5000 Life Points. Zelaya combined his Abysslindes to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines in Defense Position and then Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

[Something's wrong here. Knowing only 1 Abysslinde can activate per turn, Oscar should have kept the searched Abysslinde in hand and leave the second copy right there. This way he won't have to waste 2 extremely annoying cards for 1 other annoying card, and the Abysslinde is still there for backup. OR he could have searched another Abyssgunde, so that when the on-field Abysslinde is destroyed, he can summon Abysspike, discard Abyssgunde and get it right back while also gaining 1 more search]

Eskridge drew Cardcar D next turn. He Normal Summoned Kabazauls and then used Monster Reborn to Special Summon another Kabazauls from his Graveyard. He combined both Kabazauls to Xyz Summon Number 50: Blackship of Corn. He activated Blackship’s effect to send Wind-Up Zenmaines to the Graveyard and deal 1000 points of damage to Zelaya. Eskridge set Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

[2 Abysslindes wasted]

Zelaya Summoned Atlantean Dragoons next turn; but Eskridge banished it with Bottomless Trap Hole. Next, Zelaya attacked and destroyed Number 50: Blackship of Corn using his Abyssmegalo.

Eskridge drew another Cardcar D and Tributed it to draw Heavy Storm and Sabersaurus.

Zelaya Summoned Mermail Abysslinde. He attacked directly with his Mermail Abysslinde and his Mermail Abyssmegalo, and then activated Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abyssleed from his Deck. A direct attack from Mermail Abyssleed finished Eskridge off

Duel Two

Eskridge opened up Duel 2 with Maxx “C”, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Monster Reborn, Vanity’s Emptiness, Tragoedia, and Mirror Force. He Set Mirror Force and then ended his turn

Zelaya activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Mirror Force and then Summoned Mermail Abysspike. He discarded Atlantean Dragoons and added Snowman Eater to his hand with Abysspike’s effect. Next, he added Deep Sea Diva to his hand with the effect of Atlantean Dragoons. Zelaya attacked directly with his Mermail Abysspike. Zelaya Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

[Who sides Snowman Eater against Dino Rabbit? The Rabbit player won't be summoning Laggia anyway, all you need to do is more Dust/MST to take care of Cosmos. The searched monster should have been Abysslinde, so that you can crash into Laggia and get out Abyssleed. Considering Eskridge doesn't have Macro Cosmos at first, Oscar doesn't have to play around Cosmos like that]

Eskridge drew Sabersaurus and Summoned it. He attacked and destroyed Mermail Abysspike with Sabersaurus. He Set Vanity’s Emptiness. Zelaya activated Abyss-sphere in Main Phase 2 to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde. In his End Phase, Abyss-sphere and Mermail Abysslinde were destroyed, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Deck.

[Because Oscar had Diva, this is explainable but Eskridge had Sabersaurus on the field so Oscar couldn't OTK anyway. Abyssleed is simply a better choice because neither Utopia nor Gem Knight Pearl can get past it. Leviathan Dragon can kill Megalo, however]

Zelaya activated Heavy Storm to destroy Vanity’s Emptiness. He Summoned Deep Sea Diva next, and activated its effect. Eskridge Chained Maxx “C” and drew a card when Atlantean Marksman was Summoned. Next, Zelaya Tributed Deep Sea Diva to activated Abyssmegalo’s effect. Atlantean Marksman attacked, allowing Zelaya to recruit Atlantean Dragoons from his Deck. Eskridge drew another card. Dragoons attacked directly next, and Eskridge Special Summoned Tragoedia in Defense Position. Eskridge Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

Eskridge activated Heavy Storm to destroy Zelaya’s face-down Royal Decree. Next, he Normal Summoned Jurrac Guaiba. He attacked Atlantean Marksman with Jurrac Guaiba to destroy it and used his Guaiba’s effect to Special Summon another Guaiba from his Deck. Eskridge combined both Guaibas to Xyz Summon Evolzar Dolkka and then used his Tragoedia’s effect to copy the Level of the Sabersaurus in his Graveyard. Next, he used Monster Reborn to revive Sabersaurus. He combined Sabersaurus with Tragoedia to Xyz Summon Abyss Dweller and then Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

[Abyss Dweller + Evolzar Dolkka against a summoned Megalo? Why not Utopia + Dolkka or at least Utopia + Dweller?]

Zelaya attacked and destroyed Evolzar Dolkka with Abyssmegalo. He Set a monster and passed.

[Stupid Eskridge]

Eskridge Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck. Next, he combined both Tour Guides to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. He detached an Xyz Material from Number 17: Leviathan Dragon to boost it by 500 ATK and then attacked Mermail Abyssmegalo to destroy it. Next, Abyss Dweller attacked Atlantean Dragoons. Eskridge didn’t realize it only had 1700 ATK, so he lost his monster along with 100 Life Points. Eskridge Set 2 back rows before ending his turn.

[One more time... And Leviathan actually destroyed Megalo]

Zelaya activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Eskridge’s face-down Dimensional Prison and then Flip Summoned Snowman Eater to destroy Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. Atlantean Dragoons attacked directly, dropping Eskridge down to 2200 Life Points.

[Wasted Snowman]

Eskridge drew Kabazauls and Summoned it. He attacked Snowman Eater to destroy it and deal 1700 points of damage to Zelaya.

Zelaya attacked and destroyed Kabazauls with Atlantean Dragoons. He Set Dust Tornado before ending his turn.

Eskridge Set Dimensional Prison and Zelaya destroyed it with Dust Tornado in the End Phase.

Zelaya attacked directly with Atlantean Dragoons and Set Abyss-sphere.

Eskridge activated Mystical Space Typhoon to target Zelaya’s face-down Abyss-sphere, and when Zelaya Chained the Abyss-sphere Eskridge instantly conceded.

Top 8: Oscar Zelaya vs. Francisco Saldivar

Duel One

Saldivar started off Duel 1 by discarding Atlantean Marksman to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus and using Abyssteus’s effect to add Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck to his hand. Next, he discarded Atlantean Marksman and Mermail Abysslinde to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo, and used his Abyssmegalo’s effect to add Abyss-sphere to his hand. He Set a card to his back row and then combined his 2 Level 7 monsters to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios! He Set another card to his back row before ending his turn.

Next, Saldivar combined his Abyssmegalo with his Abyssteus to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios. He Tuned Deep Sea Diva with Mermail Abysslinde to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor next, and then attacked Marksman to destroy it with Abyssgaios. In the End Phase, Abyss-sphere was destroyed and Zelaya’s Mermail Abysslinde went down with it. Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Deck with the effect of Mermail Abysslinde.

Zelaya drew Mermail Abysslinde next turn. Next, He Normal Summoned Mermail Abysslinde and attacked Catastor. Mermail Abysslinde was destroyed by Catastor’s effect, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssleed from his Deck with the effect of Mermail Abysslinde. He combined his Mermail Abyssleed with Mermail Abyssmegalo to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios and then switched his Atlantean Dragoons to Defense Position.

[He DID had Megalo, and he didn't tribute Dragoons for Megalo to get a free search for some reason]

Saldivar attacked and destroyed Atlantean Dragoons with his Abyssgaios.

[And the Dragoons, which is precious in Mono Mermails, is wasted]

Zelaya attacked Saldivar’s Abyssgaios with his own, destroying them both.

Saldivar attacked directly with Catastor and then passed.

Zelaya Set a card to his back row and passed.

Saldivar tried to attack directly with Catastor again; but Zelaya Chained Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck in Defense Position. Catastor attacked and destroyed Mermail Abysslinde, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Deck with its effect.

Zelaya activated Abyss-squall next turn! He Special Summoned Mermail Abyssleed, Mermail Abyssmegalo, and Mermail Abysslinde from his Graveyard, and then combined his 2 Level 7 Monsters to Summon Number 11: Big Eye. He detached an Xyz Material from Number 11: Big Eye to take control of Ally of Justice Catastor. Next, he Summoned Atlantean Marksman and Tributed it to allow Abyssmegalo to attack twice. Two direct attacks from Abyssmegalo and a direct attack from Catastor wiped out the last 4800 of Saldivar’s Life Points!

Duel Two

Saldivar started off Duel 2 by Summoning Mermail Abysspike and using its effect to discard Atlantean Dragoons and add Mermail Abyssgunde to his hand. Next, he used his Dragoons’s effect to add Mermail Abyssleed to his hand. He Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo next, by discarding Mermail Abyssgunde and Mermail Abyssleed. He used Abyssmegalo’s effect to add Abyss-squall from his Deck to his hand, and then used the effect of Mermail Abyssgunde to Special Summon Mermail Abyssleed. Next, he Tributed Mermail Abysspike with the effect of Mermail Abyssleed to send Pot of Avarice from Zelaya’s hand to his Graveyard. Saldivar combined Mermail Abyssleed and Mermail Abyssmegalo next, in order to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Zelaya started off his first turn of Duel 2 with Mermail Abyssteus, 2 copies of Mermail Abyssmegalo, Mermail Abysslinde, and Abyss-squall in his hand. He discarded Mermail Abysslinde to try to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus; but Saldivar flipped Debunk to negate it and banish Abyssteus from the Duel. Zelaya Set Abyss-squall. In his Main Phase, Saldivar used Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck. Abyss-sphere and Mermail Abysslinde were destroyed in the End Phase, and Saldivar Special Summoned Mermail Abysspike from his Deck. Zelaya drew a card and conceded, unable to overcome Saldivar’s field.

Duel Three

Zelaya opened up Duel 3 with Mermail Abyssleed, Mermail Abysslinde, Mermail Abyssteus,Debunk, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Mermail Abysspike.

Saldivar Set 2 cards to his back row and passed.

Zelaya drew Abyss-sphere and then Normal Summoned Mermail Abysspike. Saldivar Set a card to his back row, and then in his End Phase, Zelaya’s Abyss-sphere and Mermail Abysslinde were destroyed, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abysspike from his Deck. He used its effect by discarding Atlantean Marksman, and added Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck to his hand. The effect of Atlantean Marksman destroyed Saldivar’s face-down Abyss-squall.

Zelaya Set a monster and passed.

Sorry I'm too tired now.

I don't understand why the guys with such misplays throughout the tournament can win the whole thing

Also I have no f***ing idea why people hate Salvage. To me it's just a winning card that you can play in triplicate

And the top cut was FULL of misplaying people. The Dino Rabbit player, Oscar's friend both made unacceptable misplays in these featured matches.

Also, this seems like I'm a dumb hater but the 2 friends drew too well all three games, right?

What's left for the TCG?

Obviously Mermail

Wind-Up, without Zenmaity and the 2 needed Magicians, is still good. That's all, good, like any other

Fire Fist is played in the wrong way. I swear the aggressive Fire Fist is better than the stun-esque builds in the TCG nowadays

Dino Rabbit? Good old Laggia and Dolkka. But it's just like Wind-Up, struggling to survive

Six Samurai? Really has potential, but the brave warriors automatically die when facing the army from the sea. 3 Macro Cosmos, 3 Dimensional Fissure is never enough when people have 3 MST, 3 Dust Tornadoes and 3 Night Beam

So the TCG is pretty much all covered with Mermails, whereas the OCG is filled with the Dragons and Prophecy.

I think the TCG is not so good right now, but still a billion times better than the OCG. No Dragons = death, which smells like the DAD format(s). Even Mermail needs Stream and Tidal

...

..

.

Side note, I just won the monthly tournament with Mermails. It looks like Billy's build, but I had 3 Salvages in it simply because I have no fucking idea why Billy didn't include it. Salvage, alone, at its best, can do 6400 damage, then makes Dewloren and cycles back your Marksman. The decklist can be found in my deck library

I'll do a post about Elemental Dragons shortly after this. Also I'm sorry for not updating, I'm just too busy with my usual daily life's work

I realized something...

Equip only to a "Mermail" monster. It gains 800 ATK. When a Spell effect that was activated on your opponent's side of the field resolves, negate that effect, then send this card to the Graveyard.

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Abyss-scale_of_Mizuchi

Does this thing help against Prophecy?

I mean, Megalo + Teus + Gunde = Abyssgaios + Abyss-scale of Mizuchi is pretty strong right? Even High Priestess + Book of Power cannot break through

Monday, March 11, 2013

Against Prophecy

There's not that much to do against them

Even if you somehow start with Naturia Beast/Shi En/LADD, High Priestess + 3 Books will still ruin your plan anyway

Shi En is the best choice among because he can let another Samurai die in his place, but that's not enough

If you try to catch up with the card advantage that Judgment provides, you'll lose quite soon. Only Mermail can create such advantages through Megalo, Deep Sea Diva,... in 1 turn. And Prophecy has Spellbok of Fate which works like Trishula or Book of Moon, and is searchable. You think you can get over that? Not that easy

...

..

.

And then I realize when I'm too tired and have nothing to do, I play my OTK decks and win quite a few games against Prophecy

They're incredibly strong after turn 1, but in your turn after that there should only be a Spellbook Magician (sometimes High Priestess) and Grand Tower on field. Because of the lack of hand traps in the nowadays builds, Hieratic and Karakuri actually stand some chances against Prophecy, especially Hieratic when we have Volcasaurus and Shark Fortress, both of which provide some more delicious OTK combos

Against Incarnate Dragon, Hieratic is good again thanks to the piercing effect of Gaia and the field clearing effect of M7 and Exa-Beetle

However, Hieratics die badly to Evilswarm

So I'm still thinking. Breakthough Skill seems good, but not enough. But trust me, the OTK rating of my Hieratic build is around 90%

And that's for today. Good luck and have fun with the Prophecy format

Six Samurai in the new format

They're obviously good against Spellbook and Fire Fist, who can't do shit without their spell cards

In fact, any decks that can make first turn Naturia Beast will be good against those 2 decks

The ability to side/main deck Dimensional Fissure and Macro Cosmos means Samurai can stand some chance against Mermail, especially when Shi En can stop any attempt of MST/Heavy'ing the Fissure/Cosmos

Against Ophion, it's a 50:50 chance. I'm talking about the dice roll. If Samurais meet Ophion first turn, it's not the end of the world (Zanji is pretty cool against Ophion) but things are hard to handle because Samurais don't often have backrow clearers. However, Ophion won't be that good against a first-turn Shi En because Shi En can negate that Ophion's Lance (Pandemic Infection whatever it is) so that the traps will be effective

And there's something that cannot be ignored, Samurais, like Dino Rabbit of last format, stands some chances because they are generally good against the non-top tier deck

So, be aware!

On a side note, Zemmaity is Titanic, Magician is Jack and Shark is Rose, lol

Upcoming format: My deck choices, side deck techs and meta prediction

So I picked the deck that I hated for the whole second half of last format. Yes, it's Mermails.

The reason is, it's the only deck that can operate the way its owner wants it to be. What's fun about Spellbook? Same things to do every duel will just be like Secret - Magician - Master - more shit (and when Judgment comes out, just fuck yourself) Yeah you may argue sometimes it gets bad hands, but the consistency of 3 Books of Secret, 3 Books of Master and 3 Magician of Books (and 3 Books of Judgment) is just ridiculous. You'll probably have to try to have bad hands lol. I tried the deck, and it's just... stupid, because winning game 1 seems way too easy

Verz, or Evilswarm, is at least more friendly. But how is it different from Dino Rabbit after all? Summon boss and protect it with traps, I hate that kind of deck (Six Samurai, Dino Rabbit, Evilswarm)

Fire Fist is a good deck, especially when the unreleased cards come out. But, if you followed my blog for long enough, I never play control-based deck. Sometimes the deck gets massive pluses from a Rescue Rabbit play, but I still don't like the deck for a reason: dependence on spell/traps. Having searches is good, but totally relying on searching is not that good when we have 3 Mystical Space Typhoons and 3 Dust Tornados flying around

Anything else? The Elemental Dragons are of my type too, but I want to wait more because it seems that Konami will be printing a lot of their support cards soon

And here is the deck:

Monster [26]
3 Deep Sea Diva
3 Atlantean Dragoons
2 Atlantean Marksman
2 Atlantean Heavy Infantry
3 Mermail Abyssmegalo
3 Mermail Abyssteus
1 Mermail Abyssleed
3 Mermail Abysslinde
3 Mermail Abysspike
2 Mermail Abyssgunde
1 Gorz

Spell [10]
3 Salvage
3 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Dark Hole
1 Heavy Storm
1 Monster Reborn
1 Pot of Avarice

Trap [5]
3 Abyss-Sphere
2 Abyss-Squall

Side deck is temporarily for DN so it's pretty stupid

So the meta will be: Mermail, Fire Fist, Evilswarm, Spellbook, and maybe some random Samurais and such stupid decks

Now take a look at siding against those deck

  • Fire Fist: Just stop the monster effect. Fiendish Chain, Effect Veiler, Breakthrough Skills are good choice. Forbidden Lance is incredible against this deck, and some more MST/Dust Tornado could also help
  • Evilswarm: Snowman Eater, Ryko, Night Assailant, Penguin Soldier, Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo, DD Warrior Lady, Grand Mole, I mean every monster of level 4 or lower that can kill Ophion. More Dust and MST is also needed too
  • Spellbook: Droll & Lock Bird will cause some minus, Imperial Iron Wall stops the whole deck (No Book of Fate, no Justice, no High Priestess), just be aware of Breaker the Magical Warrior
  • Mermail: Soul Drain, Fissure, Cosmos
Bad news for Mermail: All those deck can play Dimensional Fissure and Soul Drain, that's the reason why Imperial Iron Wall should be at 3 in Mermail's side deck. Dust Tornado is needed but space are really tight. In Mermail mirror matches, the 2 defining factors will be DDV and Abyss Dweller

I suppose the format will be about massive card trading, with every deck has the ability to make huge pluses (aside from that lockdown deck - Evilswarm). It's like that Inzektor - WindUp - Rabbit - Dragons, with Spellbook is like Wind-Up (first turn OP), Evilswarm in Rabbit's place (obviously), Fire Fist is the new Inzektor (popping and plussing), and Mermail is the new Chaos Dragon (slow start, total rush mid-game, many many special summons)

...

..

.

Which means it will be another bad format lol
